How to Vet a Gutter Contractor in South Dakota

South Dakota has no statewide license for gutter installers — so the vetting is on you, and it's quick. Do it for anyone you hire, including anyone we connect you with.

The checks

1. Insurance, verified. A certificate of general liability insurance, confirmed with the insurer — gutter work means ladders on your property, and that's what insurance is for.
2. Contractor's excise tax license. South Dakota requires contractors to hold an excise tax license with the SD Department of Revenue — a legitimate operator has one and will show it.
3. Local record. References from past seasons (ask how their gutters handled winter), and a physical presence you can find again in spring.
4. Written scope. Gauge, size (5" vs 6"), hanger type and spacing, pitch, downspout count and placement — on paper.

Red flags

• No verifiable insurance.
• Cash-up-front pricing without a written scope.
• Hanger spacing left unspecified — in snow country, that detail decides whether the run survives February.
